East District

LETTER FROM EAST DISTRICT PRESIDENT:

UMW Friends,

Legislative Event did not disappoint! After a day and a half of hearing and discussing issues that affect the citizens of Texas, we had the opportunity to visit the capital and speak to our Representatives, Senators and their staff members about the 2013 UMW Legislative Agenda.

Included this year on our agenda are providing funding for long term water needs, restoring funding for education and making revisions to the testing requirements(STAAR and End of Course exams), increasing regulation of pay day lending, making changes to criminal justice and mental health care to humanize and increase their effectiveness, and to extend Medicaid to those who earn below 138 percent of the national poverty level.

The East District will be offering you opportunities to join in post card campaigns at our events this spring. If you’d like to begin now, contact me or the Social Action Chair for East District, Anne Ridley-Pleasant, and we will be glad to assist.
